  • What is Mindfulness

    So What Is Mindfulness?

In the words of Jon Kabat-Zinn mindfulness is “the awareness that arises when you pay attention to the present moment, on purpose, with kindness, curiosity and non-judgement”.

Sounds simple enough, right? You just need to pay attention, what can be hard about that?

Except paying attention, really paying attention, can be challenging. There are so many things that can distract us. Our phones, social media, work. Even our thoughts can distract us from really being present in the moment.

But the thing is, that moment when you realize you are having a thought? That right there is awareness.

So you notice the distraction. You observe it without holding onto it. No judgements. It’s not good or bad, it just is. And you let it pass and come back to the moment.

A common phrase used is to “Begin again”. Each time you find yourself coming out of the present moment, when that moment of awareness happens, you begin again.

    The practice

Starting a mindfulness practice can seem pretty intimidating. Especially if you’ve never meditated before.

Here at The Mindfulness Journey, I get that. When I first started practicing, I knew mindfulness was for me and I STILL struggled with meditating every day.

The thing I love about mindfulness is that it can be done anytime and anywhere. And that’s something that I hope to show you on this journey together.

The best place to start a practice is right where you are at. If that’s meditating for 2 minutes a day – that’s great!

If it’s meditating for longer, hey, that’s great too.

Each moment spent meditating takes you one step further down the path of awareness.

A great place to start is with this FREE challenge. When you sign up you will receive 7 daily emails with different meditations (audio or video) and tasks that will help you to create a practice that is right for you.

    So who am I?

I’m Charlene and I first started meditating back in 2014. Before that I was NOT someone who meditated. Up to that point my idea of meditating was basically sitting in the dark with some candles lit, for maybe 5 minutes? I didn’t get much out of the experience. Because “I don’t meditate.”

    Sound familiar?

I’m sure it does to a few of you.

    So what changed in 2014?

In a moment it all changed.

Well, the year before I had one of those moments that changed my entire life in seconds. I was crossing the street when I was hit by a bus. Literally.

I fractured my skull in a few places and had significant brain swelling as a result of the accident. Enough that I ended up having my first (of 4) neurosurgeries in the days after the accident.

The accident, the brain injury, and the resulting surgeries meant that:

    1. I could no longer continue to work with students with ASD and behavioural issues like I was
    2. that I had a LOT of anxiety and depression
    3. and I had no idea what my future was going to look like and what I was going to do next.

When my social worker suggested I give mindfulness a try, let me tell you, I was willing to try anything at that point.

To say that it changed my life would be an understatement.

Over time I went from being someone who was so shy that they couldn’t talk to anyone to being described as confident (!) by people who just met me.

I learned how to get out of my head, to move past all the thoughts and noise and to start living my life.

That’s when I realized that this is what I want to teach other people how to do for themselves.

So The Mindfulness Journey was created.
